Massage Therapy Techniques

Swedish Massage  This massage technique employs gentle but firm manipulation of pressure points and muscles.  Massage oil or lotion is used to lubricate the skin to lessen friction and ease manipulation.  This is a basic relaxation massage that reduces tension, improves muscular relaxation and stimulates circulation through gentle manipulation.  The Swedish massage involves massage techniques to warm up the tissues and assess for restricted areas, separate tissues, work out toxins and loosen adhesions, stimulate and tone muscles and cool down and relax areas that have been worked.  This massage promotes deep relaxation, inner peace and overall well-being.  By feeling good overall immunities are enhanced.

Myofascial Release  Myofascial release is a unique form of massage that targets the fascia, the thin tissue that covers every organ, muscle and fiber in the body. When any part of the fascia system is stressed or blocked it affects all other systems. Myofascial release therapy is based on the idea that poor posture, physical injury, illness, and emotional stress can throw the body out of alignment and cause its intricate web of fascia to become taut and constricted.  Restrictions in the Myofascial system may be caused by trauma – either physical or emotional, inflammation, or posture, and results in abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures and organs. Myofascial release therapy offers a gentle blend of stretching and massage, using hands-on manipulation of the entire body to promote healing and relieve pain.  Myofascial release is a gentler form of massage that is specifically used to target such maladies as back pain, recurring headaches, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle spasms, whiplash injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome. People with diabetes, who are at increased risk for painful plantar fasciitis and frozen shoulder, may also benefit.

Deep Tissue  Deep Tissue Massage utilizes slow strokes, direct pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles with the fingers, thumbs or elbows.  Deep tissue massage works deeply into the muscles and connective tissue to reach the fascia beneath the surfaces of the muscles which helps release chronic aches and pains.  This technique is useful in treating chronic pain, inflammation and injury.

Polarity   Polarity Massage is the art of healing based on energy in motion.  Through gently rocking, holding and massaging, this therapeutic technique rejuvenates energy flow and encourages revitalization.

Reflexology   Reflexology works on the principle that all parts of the body are mapped in miniature on our feet, hands and ears.  By applying pressure and massage to these areas, "reflex points" can be balanced and stagnation of energy gradually unblock.  Reflexology stimulated the flow of energy which helps improve blood circulation throughout the body.  Reflexology reduces stress and induces deep relaxation, cleanses the body of toxins, as well as helps balance the muscular, lymphatic, immune and nervous systems.

Trigger Point Release   Trigger points are a community of networking points inside the muscles of the body, which create pain and discomfort.  In trigger point release, the myofascial tissue is moved, and then released, by a deep touch on these points.  With skilled and conscious guidance these points can be stimulated to decreased muscle tension and pain.

Sports Massage   Sports massage involves palpation and assessment; increasing flexibility and range of motion; pre-, inter- and post-event massage; and maintenance massage between events for prevention of injury and to help with strength and endurance.  Adhesions and trigger points are released to enhance performance.  Sports massage can reduce recovery time and soreness.  The use of heat and/or ice on areas of strain may be administered.  Stretches to release facial adhesions and increase or maintain flexibility are done.  Slow, static stretching, myofacial unwinding, and/or client assisted stretching techniques are done to free restricted areas and promote and maintain flexibility.  Sports massage loosens, warms and prepares muscles for activity.  It helps to prevent sports related injuries, improves performance and endurance, relieves post-event pain and stiffness, and returns muscles to normal faster.

Prenatal Massage   Prenatal massage helps alleviate some of the ailments associated with pregnancy, including lower back, neck and shoulder pain, fluid retention, swelling, fatigue, joint tenderness and stretch marks.   For an easier pregnancy, massage can relieve discomfort and possibly even make labor easier. Massage also tends to instill a feeling of well-being to both mother and unborn child. Regardless of individual circumstances, a pregnant woman's body is challenged, changed and stressed in many ways. Massage gives special attention to the mother-to-be, which in turn nurtures the new life that grows within her.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy   This massage technique uses a very light touch to address the flow of cerebro-spinal fluid and possible restrictions, freeing long standing emotional and positional holding patterns.  Using a 10-step protocol, different areas of the skull and sacrum are worked by holding energy points, thus allowing the spinal column to align correctly balancing the rhythm or flow of cerebro-spinal fluid. Those suffering headaches or who have experienced trauma may benefit from this technique.

Shiatsu Massage   Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage therapy using finger pressure on specific pressure points to improve energy flow.  The concept of Shiatsu is to promote health and facilitate healing by correcting imbalances in the body.  Shiatsu can be used to treat back pain, headaches, neck injuries and stiffness, reduced mobility, digestive problems, sports injuries, frozen shoulder, sciatica and hypertension.

Chair Massage   A chair massage is the most convenient method of massage therapy.  Chair massage lasts about 15 minutes and is done while fully clothed.  A chair massage promotes better circulation and muscle stimulation.  This form of massage reduces tension in the back, neck and shoulders--providing deep relaxation.  A swift chair massage revitalizes your anatomy and encourages overall well-being.

European Facial Massage
The fast finger movement of the facial massage, using warm moisturizing cream, detoxifies the skin and promotes blood circulation in the face and throat.  This massage not only treats the problem of aging skin, but also relieves headaches.  The facial massage will tone muscles, unblock sinuses, reduce stress and tension, tighten sagging skin and soften wrinkle lines.
